“Speaking of alcohol, let’s examine a nice little myth—or, perhaps, a “myth‑conception.” It concerns a widespread image of a Saint Bernard rescue dog. And it goes like this: You’re up on a mountain freezing to death. And then, just in the nick of time, in swoops a trusty Saint Bernard carrying a mini‑keg of brandy around its neck to get you back on your feet. Brandy is sure to warm your cold innards, right? Well, no. Biochemistry says alcohol is probably the last thing you’d want to pour down someone who’s freezing. Why would alcohol be a bad thing for a person who’s cold? Well, since biochemically, alcohol inhibits gluconeogenesis in the liver, it prevents production of glucose. But the brain and muscle are freezing and starving and need glucose! So, what should you offer someone who is hypothermic? They need sugar and warmth. A candy bar might be good. Hot cocoa would be perfect.” (L24)
